HOW TO MAKE A THIN TOP LIP LOOK FULL

QUESTION:
My top and bottom lips are two different sizes. My top lip is very thin and my bottom lip is very full. I only wear light colored lip gloss because I don't want to bring attention to my lips. I am very self conscious. I would love to wear red lip gloss, but I don't know how. Can you offer some suggestions?

SUGGESTION:
Try using a little concealer on your top lip line - first. Then using a lip pencil, slightly line outside your upper lip. Careful not to use the pencil too far away from your lip line. Also, match the color of the pencil as closely to your desired lip color as possible. Lining your lip in this way should make your top lip look a little fuller. You can control lip colors and keep them from running by using a lip stick before adding gloss.

For bold red lips, try Fire Engine Red by Laugh SHINE Repeat, $16.

Improve Your Kisses

Kisses don’t lie! Sure, they can reveal much about our emotions, but they can also tell an interesting story about how well we care for our lips. Before you pucker up today, make note of these tips to keep your lips are as soft and kissable as possible!

Drink Plenty of Water – No matter how often you apply gloss or balm, if you’re dehydrated your lips will be prone to flaking. Drinking between 6 to 8 glasses of water a day is not just good for your lips – it’s good for your whole body!

Exfoliate Lips - Just like your face and body, your lips need to be properly cared for as well. If you want long lasting lip color, keep them free of dry skin and those dreaded 'lip balls'! Make your own lip scrub using brown sugar and olive oil. Apply the scrub with a soft tooth brush or moist towel. Careful not to over exfoliate your lips. Scrubs should only be used once per week. Lip tissue is extremely sensitive and the use of lip scrubs often can result in damaged lip tissue.

Use A Lip Balm - Keep a moisture rich lip balm handy at home and in your purse for those times when your lips feel dry. Hydrate your lips with Mentha Lip Balm by Laugh SHINE Repeat, $16.

What would you do if a hot guy asked to borrow your lip gloss?

So, you see a hot guy walking towards you at a party and your heart starts fluttering. He comes closer and leans against you, dazzling you with his smile. He's so FINE! Your knees are shaky. Then he whispers, "Can I borrow some of your lip gloss?" You ask, "What did you say?" It's an awkward moment but in a blink of an eye, your knight in shining armor is now wearing Go Bare by Laugh SHINE Repeat... and he's straight.

Believe it or not, incidents like this are not uncommon. When The Deacon Chronicle asked a few guys about the things too embarrassing to buy and the interesting items they've borrowed from a girl, they had plenty to say. "I borrowed strawberry lip gloss because my lips were chapped. it worked well and even tasted good," laughs Rahil, a software professional. "I also borrow Kajal sometimes to make my eyes look intense," he adds.

Nishanth, a consultant says,"I once borrowed chapstick and sunscreen lotion. It was a sunny day, so you can't blame me! I also wore a girl's bag and sunglasses all night at a party just for fun." Numan, an engineer, quips, "I am guilty of borrowing moisturizers quite often. Also, I was in urgent need of sports shoes and one day and borrowed them from a female friend. Thankfully, the shoes weren't too girly."

Take our poll question on the right side of the blog and tell us, "What would you do if a hot guy asked to borrow your lip gloss?" Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comment section below. Who knows, maybe we should add a "man gloss" to the Laugh SHINE Repeat line! - xoxo

PROBLEM SOLVED: NO MORE GUNKY LIPS!

For a lack of better words; having gunky lip gloss caked in the corners of your mouth sucks! It’s a common problem for lip gloss users during colder months. Still, for every problem, there is a solution.

When lips are dry and flaky, particles can get trapped in the creases and create a gunky coating. Exfoliate your pucker with a washcloth before applying gloss. You can also run a cotton swab along the inside of the lips to remove the film. Or switch to a glossy balm. Try our Mentha Lip Balm, $16 at laughshinerepeat.com

LAUGH SHINE READ: TAMMIE'S PICK - BITTERSWEET BY SHELIA BANKS

R&B Singing Legend Mary Wells and Television Personality Shelia Banks
As a teenager I COMPLETELY idolized television personality, Shelia Banks. She was the original co-host of BET's Video Soul with Donnie Simpson and was always FABULOUS!

Nothing you could say or do could keep me away from my television when Sheila was on the air. I was completely taken by Shelia’s grace, flawless on air delivery and her Fire Engine red lips! Fast forward a few years (smiles) and I am still just as in awe of her gifts and talents as ever.

Obviously pretty darn good at wearing multiple hats, Shelia has  a new job - author! Her first book is called Bittersweet; a novel based on a true story. The book hasn't even hit stores shelves, but people are already buzzing about it! I could totally see Bittersweet on the big screen! It's just that good!

Bittersweet is listed on Barnes & Noble's website for pre-ordering at a discounted price.  Go Shelia, Go! - xoxox

ABOUT THE BOOK

When a deeper hued playmate declares, “My mamma says you ain’t nothin’ but a whole lotta yellow gon’ to waste,” Ellie gets a taste of racism on her side of the fence. But the often-tortured, uneducated young girl refuses to let the taunt dampen her spirit. Instead her passion and drive for self-realization propel her from a childhood rape in swampy LeBeau, Louisiana to a spurious first marriage in the Indian/Creole/Black dust bowl of Oklahoma and a successful career as a fashion designer, business owner, and real estate entrepreneur in Los Angeles. Decade’s later life comes full circle when her daughter dates a young white man whose father had been one of those who raped Ellie and Ellie is brutalized by her own people at the ignition of the Watts Riots. This debut novel is one of coming of age, race, womanhood, and the determination of a woman to succeed in early-20th-century America despite the country’s racial prescriptions and gender presumptions. Through it all, Ellie’s relationships with her loved ones force her to deal with the trauma of her childhood and the difficulties of letting go and to recognize the values of forgiveness, understanding, love, and healing.

Inspiring Salon Profile: Christopher Stevens The Salon

Stylist Tanya Crumel, "Good Hair" the documentary with Steven Lacy
Laugh Shine Repeat Gloss Ware is on a mission to inspire happiness in the lives of women everywhere! While happiness can obviously come from a number of sources, we L-O-V-E lip gloss! Our brand was birthed from a belief that a small, beauty tool like lip gloss can actually be used to remind women to SHINE and be happy.

Master Stylist Steven Lacy of Christopher Stevens the Salon agrees. Lacy not only retails Laugh SHINE Repeat at his St. Louis salon, he uses LSR as an occasional finishing tool for his clients. "Adding color and shine to the lips after a service enhances the overall good experience we provide,” says Lacy. “Laugh SHINE Repeat makes our clients happy.”

Thomas Watson, Sr. said it best, "To be successful, you have to have your heart in your business and your business in your heart." Clearly Steven Lacy understands Watson's words very well. He  operates a successful salon and is endeared by his clients and peers alike. We recently sat down with the master stylist to get the scoop on everything from his sources of inspiration to pumping iron; yes, my friends... he's a bodybuilder too! Enjoy - xoxo :)

Master Stylist and Educator Steven Lacy of CS the Salon
LSR: Pretend you are a client and tell us what you like most about Christopher Stevens the Salon.
SL: There’s a friendly upbeat and knowledgeable group of artists at Christopher Stevens. It’s very easy to tell they enjoy what they do!

CS the Salon Stylist Valerie Brown
LSR: We love your website. How important is it to your business?
SL: Thanks for the compliment! Having an effective website is necessary.  People surf the web for images and information all the time.  It’s important for us at Christopher Stevens to be of assistance to our clients in every way possible. Our website is simply another extension of the quality services we provide.

LSR: Thanks so much for retailing Laugh SHINE Repeat at your salon! Do you think having retail merchandise for sale enhances the overall experience for your clients?
SL: You are very welcome. We proudly support the happy woman movement! After receiving services, most of our clients want to freshen their faces with a little pop of color.  Having lip gloss for testing and purchasing is another positive contributor to the overall good experience we work hard to provide at Christopher Stevens the Salon.
Bronze Ice by Laugh Shine Repeat

LSR: What is your most popular selling Laugh SHINE Repeat Gloss Ware color?
SL: A lot of our clients enjoy Bronze Ice by Laugh SHINE Repeat.

LSR: Who and what inspires you?
SL: My hair idol is Vidal Sassoon. He inspires me. Vidal Sassoon has an uncanny ability to turn the simplistic into extraordinary. He’s also very successful. I like that. I am an extremely driven person who is inspired by success and successful people like Mr. Sassoon. So, answering the second part of your question; failure is what motivates me. Failure is never an option for me.  I am always pushing to be better.

LSR: Who have been some of the favorite people you have worked with?
SL: I am completely inspired by Donnal Chung. Simply watching him work is art! His talents have been a source of inspiration for me.

LSR: How important is it to have interests outside of owning a salon and being a hair stylist?
SL: Having outside interests are as important as it is to have a healthy body and current industry knowledge. In addition to my work at my salon, I am an Educator for Design Essentials; a job that I keeps me on toes. I also enjoy body building. Teaching and body building helps strengthen my resolve to grow and share.

LSR: We admire the fact that you are always evolving and growing. What’s next for Steven Lacy and Christopher Stevens The Salon?
SL: More education, lots of travel, body building, clothing, dvd’s, innovative promotions and so much more!

IF YOU DREAM ABOUT BLACK CHERRY LIP GLOSS AT NIGHT…

(Color Swatch - Black Cherry
Glossware by Laugh SHINE Repeat)

… Chances are it means you’ll be getting some cash soon! Seriously, to see the color burgundy in a dream symbolizes wealth, success and prosperity. It is indicative of your potential power.

Wow, think about what would happen if you wore black cherry lip gloss during the day!? Pick up a tube HERE! And, if you’re having dreams about other colors, click HERE to see what they could mean!

BLACK CHERRY LIPS: I FEEL LOVE

Even if wine stained and berry colored lips weren’t “in” for the season, I would still rock my Black Cherry lip gloss. The color makes me feel grown up and sexy in a Donna Summer kind of way. It’s almost as though the color gives me permission to be the grown up I once pretended to be as a kid. . . "too hot ta trot now baby!"

Never mind the fact I couldn’t have been more than 5-or-6 years old, “I Feel Love” by Donna Summer was my jam. From time to time, Mr. Gray the next door neighbor would knock on the thin walls of our two family flat as a signal to put some ‘drawers’ on the volume of the component set. Of course I would oblige, but not without an attitude. Mr. Gray had no idea how much he was blocking my groove. I may have physically been in my living room, but in my head I was smack dab in the center of the dance floor at a big, fancy night club far, far, away!

That’s me sitting on my mom’s lap circa a year that really doesn’t matter. (LOL) My aunt Stephanie is putting color on my sister Kelly’s lips. Had my Black Cherry Laugh SHINE Repeat been around back then, I probably would have gotten more whoopings! There is a God. . . and I feel L-O-V-E!

MEET DANIELE THOMAS: AN INSPIRING LAUGH SHINE REPEAT WOMAN

UPDATE: This Inspiring Laugh SHINE Repeat profile was originally posted in February of last year. Since then our friend Daniele Thomas has gotten extremely weak and is on life support. The North Carolina resident and mother of two has been living with a mixed connective tissue disorder for years. Her disease has an unknown origin and has destroyed a great deal of lung function and usage of her joints.

We are extremely moved by Daniele’s courage, strength and ability to stand tall in the midst of so much pain and adversity. We’ve reposted her story in hopes others will remember her through thoughts and prayers and be educated on mixed connective tissue disorders.

"I wish people could achieve what they think would bring them happiness in order for them to realize that it's not really what happiness is.” - Alanis Morrisette

We are inspired by the life of Daniele Thomas; a beautiful mother of two from North Carolina. To us, Daniele epitomizes what it means to be a Laugh SHINE Repeat woman. While Daniele suffers from a mixed connective tissue disorder that is destroying her lungs and limiting the usage of her joints, she stands firm in the face of adversity and pain. Daniele desperately needs a double lung transplant to survive but has decided no matter what happens in her life she WILL always SHINE.

Daniele is an extremely courageous, irrepressibly upbeat and inspiring young woman. Those who know Daniele best say being in her presence lifts their spirits sky-high. Simply put, Daniele is the gold standard by which character should be measured.

Keep going, Daniele! We admire you greatly! - xoxox

To learn more about Daniele Thomas, Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder or to be of help to a deserving Laugh SHINE Repeat woman, click HERE!

LSR: Growing up, what was your favorite fairy tale or children’s story?
Daniele Thomas: My favorite children's fairy tale is Cinderella. It's just so magical and enchanting. I love that unexpectedly she meets her Prince Charming and they fall in love. And even though people tried to keep them apart, he's determined to find his Princess and marry her and they live happily ever after. Now I know its a fairy tale, but Im secretly waiting on my Prince Charming. ;) shhh...lol

LSR: If you were a super hero, what powers would you possess?

Daniele Thomas: I would want the power to heal. And not just because of my situation (although it would come in really handy right now ;) )I feel no one should lose control of their body to a life-altering disease. Oh, and I'd have to fly of course ;)

LSR: What can’t you get enough of?

Daniele Thomas: My babies... The time that I spend with them is so precious to me. Every laugh, every smile, every giggle melts my heart. I can't wait!

LSR: What do you value most in life?

Daniele Thomas: Holidays. I love it when family and friends get together and just... LIVE. Break out the games, get a couple of drinks, and make great unforgettable memories and capture as many as you can on film. I absolutely LOVE being surrounded by family.

LSR: Is there a quote, scripture or mantra you live by?

Daniele Thomas: "I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together."

LSR: Who are your role models?

Daniele Thomas: All the strong women in my family. My grandmother, who is the head of us all was born and raised in France and didn't come to the USA until she was 21, speaking ONLY French. She had four boys and two FABULOUS girls. My mother and my aunt are two VERY strong women in their own different ways. I am very blessed to have been raised by my mother and also experienced a moment when I lived with my aunt my freshman year of high school. My sister is a very strong and independent young woman. And then of course, there's my favorite: my daughter. Even though she is only three, she is surrounded by four generations of impeccable women.

LSR:You have won a prize. The prize has two options, and you can choose either (but not both). The first option is a year in Europe with a monthly stipend of $2,000. The second option is ten minutes on the moon. Which option do you select?

Daniele Thomas: Wait wait wait... First thing's first... Can my kids come with me cause if so, oh you can send me to Europe in a heartbeat and send me a postcard of the moon ;-) There are so many places that I would love to go and experience in Europe and I would love for my children to experience the culture as well.

IF IT WERE ANY CLOSER . . .

. . . You’d be wearing it!

Color Swatch: Bad Bessie Glossware, $16 laughshinerepeat.com

THE REAL BAD BESSIE: BESSIE SMITH

Bad (slang)
1.) Adjective used to describe a trendy woman.
2.) Good looking or attractive
3.) Envied and wanted by many

“I can’t go to the club without a man telling me how bad I am.” – Urban Dictionary

In her lifetime, blues singer Bessie Smith epitomized what it means to be a Laugh SHINE Repeat Woman; she was bold, fearless, talented and a master at her craft. Quite frankly, Bessie Smith was BAD.

Not only was Bessie Smith the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s, she was tougher than nails and bad to the bone. As the highest paid black performer of her day, Bessie Smith called her own shots and ran the show.

Like a true champion, Bessie Smith had a wonderful way of turning adversity into triumph. Many of her songs are the tales of liberated women.

After her death in 1937, Bessie Smith left behind a rich, influential legacy of 160 recordings. Many great divas like Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin owe a debt to Bessie Smith and her work. In Janis Joplin’s own words of tribute, “She showed me the air and taught me how to fill it.”

QUESTION: How "BAD" are you?

Bad Bessie by Laugh SHINE Repeat; a multi-dimensional, raspberry red colored lip gloss. Bad Bessie glides on smoothly to give a light SHINE to the lips with subtle pearl shimmer!

Wear it only if you’re “bad” – xoxo.

MEET DJ JO PRIMA: AN INSPIRING LAUGH SHINE WOMAN

German poet and playwright Christian Hebbel once said, “nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion.” We of course believe Hebbel’s words to be true.

If you’re interested in making some positive changes in the new year, identify your passions and allow them to be your guide. Your passions will give you the ability to overcome most obstacles associated with achieving your dreams. If you love to sing, then you must sing! If you love to dance, then you must dance! If you love to paint, then you must paint – period!

Today we salute Jo Prima, an up and coming DJ who has not only dedicated her life to living out her passions, she fearlessly ROCKS in a male dominated industry. To us, DJ Jo Prima is an inspiring Laugh SHINE Repeat woman! - xoxo

Pictured, DJ Jo Prima wearing Hot Lips by Laugh SHINE Repeat
Make-up by Camille Scott of Creations by Camille

LSR: How did you break into the entertainment industry as a DJ?

I began working as a DJ about a year ago. Through a mutual friend, I was introduced to DJ K-Tone out of Denver. Once he realized that I was serious, he came to St. Louis to help me get all the equipment that I needed and showed me the basics.

I then started to practice everyday on my own. In March of this year, I started spinning at The In Spot in St. Louis on Wednesday nights. Since then I have been able to gain exposure and bookings around the city. A highlight so far was getting the opportunity to DJ a large birthday party in Seattle where the R&B singer MYA was a host!

Pictured, DJ K-Tone

LSR: Do you find it difficult to work in such a male-dominated industry?

I haven't found it difficult to work in the industry thus far. I have actually been embraced by most people and find the majority to be excited to see a female DJ.

LSR: Do you have a strategy for dealing with people who may have a problem with the fact you’re a DJ who happens to be a woman?

No, I follow no strategies. I stay professional and demand respect at all times which quickly makes them get over it!

LSR: Who are your role models?

My parents are my role models. They have taught me the importance of hard work and have always encouraged me to do whatever makes me happy. Their love and integrity have guided me in my life.

LSR: How would you define your sets? What guides your song selection?

I would define my sets as soulful and upbeat. My love is for true Hip Hop & Soulful R&B. I always consult my clients before I DJ an event to ensure that the music is right for the occasion.

LSR: Do you have a scripture or Mantra you live by?

I have two. "You can do anything you set your mind to, but it takes action, dedication, and sacrifice." The other is "treat people the way you want to be treated."

LSR: What’s next for DJ Jo Prima?

I am focused on becoming the best DJ that I can be! Everyone will soon know my name. I plan to expand myself beyond St. Louis and take advantage of the relationships that I have across the country.

Quote of the day: “If reaching your dream is a road trip, then passion is the fuel that will get you there.” - Unknown
