German poet and playwright Christian Hebbel once said, “nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion.” We of course believe Hebbel’s words to be true.
If you’re interested in making some positive changes in the new year, identify your passions and allow them to be your guide. Your passions will give you the ability to overcome most obstacles associated with achieving your dreams. If you love to sing, then you must sing! If you love to dance, then you must dance! If you love to paint, then you must paint – period!
Today we salute Jo Prima, an up and coming DJ who has not only dedicated her life to living out her passions, she fearlessly ROCKS in a male dominated industry. To us, DJ Jo Prima is an inspiring Laugh SHINE Repeat woman! - xoxo

LSR: How did you break into the entertainment industry as a DJ?
I began working as a DJ about a year ago. Through a mutual friend, I was introduced to DJ K-Tone out of Denver. Once he realized that I was serious, he came to St. Louis to help me get all the equipment that I needed and showed me the basics.
I then started to practice everyday on my own. In March of this year, I started spinning at The In Spot in St. Louis on Wednesday nights. Since then I have been able to gain exposure and bookings around the city. A highlight so far was getting the opportunity to DJ a large birthday party in Seattle where the R&B singer MYA was a host!

LSR: Do you find it difficult to work in such a male-dominated industry?
I haven't found it difficult to work in the industry thus far. I have actually been embraced by most people and find the majority to be excited to see a female DJ.
LSR: Do you have a strategy for dealing with people who may have a problem with the fact you’re a DJ who happens to be a woman?
No, I follow no strategies. I stay professional and demand respect at all times which quickly makes them get over it!
LSR: Who are your role models?
My parents are my role models. They have taught me the importance of hard work and have always encouraged me to do whatever makes me happy. Their love and integrity have guided me in my life.
LSR: How would you define your sets? What guides your song selection?
I would define my sets as soulful and upbeat. My love is for true Hip Hop & Soulful R&B. I always consult my clients before I DJ an event to ensure that the music is right for the occasion.
LSR: Do you have a scripture or Mantra you live by?
I have two. "You can do anything you set your mind to, but it takes action, dedication, and sacrifice." The other is "treat people the way you want to be treated."
LSR: What’s next for DJ Jo Prima?
I am focused on becoming the best DJ that I can be! Everyone will soon know my name. I plan to expand myself beyond St. Louis and take advantage of the relationships that I have across the country.
Quote of the day: “If reaching your dream is a road trip, then passion is the fuel that will get you there.” - Unknown
