3.) Envied and wanted by many
“I can’t go to the club without a man telling me how bad I am.” – Urban Dictionary
In her lifetime, blues singer Bessie Smith epitomized what it means to be a Laugh SHINE Repeat Woman; she was bold, fearless, talented and a master at her craft. Quite frankly, Bessie Smith was BAD.
Not only was Bessie Smith the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s, she was tougher than nails and bad to the bone. As the highest paid black performer of her day, Bessie Smith called her own shots and ran the show.
Like a true champion, Bessie Smith had a wonderful way of turning adversity into triumph. Many of her songs are the tales of liberated women.
After her death in 1937, Bessie Smith left behind a rich, influential legacy of 160 recordings. Many great divas like Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin owe a debt to Bessie Smith and her work. In Janis Joplin’s own words of tribute, “She showed me the air and taught me how to fill it.”
