Thousands of tubes of lip gloss are sold by a host of companies in the United States every single minute of the day. While we love statistics about women who buy lip gloss, we don’t necessarily love what happens to those tubes when they become empty. Discared tubes of lip gloss and lipstick contribute to 12 percent of all solid plastic waste in our country. Of the nearly 29 million tons of discarded plastic, only 5.7 percent is eventually recycled, compared to nearly 50 percent of paper and 22 percent of glass and aluminum that is recovered and recycled.
Laugh SHINE Repeat is a new company and we’re working on a recycling system for your old tubes of lip gloss. Until then, we’d like to offer a few creative ways to help you repurpose your tubes. Think GREEN and reuse em’!
Seasoning Shaker: How many times have you been on lunch at work and needed a packet of salt or just a pinch of your favorite seasoning to spice up leftovers or carry-outs? Fill a clean lip gloss container and carefully remove the applicator wand from the cap. Clean tubes by soaking them in warm, soapy water and air dry.Fill a tube with a little salt and pepper and toss it into your desk drawer or purse.
Perfume on the Go: Can’t find your favorite fragrance in a bottle small enough to fit into your purse? Fill a clean lip gloss container with your favorite perfume or essential oil. Make certain to clean the applicator wand. Use the wand to dab the fragrance on your body.
Instant Manicure: If you’re between manicures and your nail beds are brittle and your cuticles are dry, dab a little oil on them from an old lip gloss tube! Be certain to clean your lip gloss tube and applicator – first. Fill with olive oil or grape seed oil, if you have it. For a fresh touch, add few drops of essential oil to the tube.
